Trying new things is scary, right? It’s the fear of the unknown.
A lot of people I speak to are scared of entering the free weights zone in the gym. If you’re a newbie and just finding your feet with how much weight you can lift and the correct way of doing it then all those (stereotypically) sweaty men throwing weights around can be intimidating, or you may feel like you are getting in their way.
Maybe you’re scared of trying a new class because you’re not entirely sure what you’re doing or you don’t know anybody.
Maybe you’re scared of going for a run or bike ride because you’re a beginner or out of practice and you worry that you might not be very good or not be able to go very far.
Remember:
- Everybody was a beginner at some stage, they all felt like you, pushed through and it must’ve been worth it as they’re still doing it.
- Some people are still winging it – they may have all the gear but they may also have no idea!
- You’re lapping everyone on the couch – if you’re moving it doesn’t matter how fast or how much you’re lifting.
- Nobody cares. Sad but true, everybody is far more interested in themselves than what you are doing.
- Once you’ve done it, you won’t be a beginner anymore.
- The best things in life are on the other side of your comfort zone.
So next time you’re feeling a little apprehensive about trying something new or entering the free weights zone, take a deep breath and go for it, I bet you don’t regret it.
